All About Mods & How to Take Care of Them: Part 1

I am making this post because there are A LOT of people who are new to Sims 4 or just new to using mods in general. This post will address how to install mods, how to organize them, how to get rid of them, and how to update them, as well as some tips & tricks on caring for them.

How To Install Mods in The Sims 4

If you're new to mods, this part is VERY important.

First, so you have an idea, you need to get familiar with the documents folder.

Get to know this path: C:\Users\Username\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4. This may look a tiny bit different based on your computer, but to get to your mods folder, you go to "Documents" to "Electronic Arts" to "The Sims 4", then to "Mods." This step may seem simple, but it can be very confusing for some of you, who have never played Sims or used mods.

Click on the gallery below for examples.

Now before I go on, I must show you the MOST important file in the ENTIRE Mods folder.

The "Resource.cfg" file. Without this file, your mods WILL NOT WORK, so make sure you don't accidentally delete it. If you do, you can either rename your Mods folder to Mods_ and restart Sims 4 and a new Mods folder will be generated where you can copy & paste the "Resource.cfg" file into your original Mods folder and delete the new Mods folder and rename the original Mods Folder back to "Mods" OR you can download a new one HERE.

How To Organize Mods

Now we're gonna get to good part. Downloading mods. To keep all of your mods happy and healthy, you need to set up separate folders for organization, as you can see in the example above.

Each folder is made to segregate tops from bottoms, and inside those folders, we can segregate male top or bottoms from female tops or bottoms. This may be a long and tedious process, but it will save you from dying of heartbreak (literally) later.

Where to Download Mods

Now that you've got your Mods folder all set up, you're probably wondering "Where do I download mods?" Well I can provide a list of simblrs and sites I like to download Mods/CC from. BTW mods are usually in package form. *Please Note that you may have to left-click download links and open them in new tabs, this is a common issue for Tumblr downloads.

And sometimes what I do is search up what I'm looking for in google images or lookthrough pintrest and lookbooks on tumblr.

Once you've downloaded your mods, put them in their corresponding folders. I also suggest making folders inside the "Makeup" folder to separate lip, eye, skin, & face related mods from each other.

In the sims 4, recolors are popular to change the colors of default or modded clothing or furniture, in order for a recolor to work, you MUST have the original mesh to that recolor or you will get this in-game:

Or maybe even missing body parts. This can also happen if a mod isn't updated, broken, or worn with another garment it hates. If you can't find the original mesh, don't put it in your game. Like I mentioned on Kalewa's download link, she recolors a lot of modded clothes to be pretty and pastel, those recolors need the original meshes, in her case Hallowsims hair, who no longer exists, but her simfileshare folder is still available with all of her downloads.

We can now discuss game mods such as mod packs or cheat mods that change the way the game works, whether its adding new jobs, allowing you to sell drugs, or to go school with your sims, we need to now how to install "script" mods. These are mods with the extension of ".script." These mods cannot be inside more than one folder. So, inside the "Mods" folder, they cannot go any deeper than "Script Mods" or whatever you name it, that's it they can't be put in any more folders or else the mod will not work.

*Excuse the writing, I'm horrible at writing with a track pad

Well that's it for this part. In the next part, we will discuss how to find bad CC/mods, how to delete them, and how to update CC/mods.

Until Then, See Ya!
